The housing crisis is at our doorstep. Regeneration and gentrification are the key words, and very often they mean almost same thing. While everyone heard about estates in Elephant and Castle, Brixton, Islington or Hackney that went through their rebirth...little is known of a real gem in the heart of Catford: Excalibur Estate. What is so special about it? It is the only pre-fabricated post-war housing estate left in London and is the UK's largest remaining estate of prefabs. The estate consisted of 187 single storey, two-bedroomed prefabricated bungalows. There were no amenities situated on the estate except for the church, St. Marks. Very soon just six of them (listed and graded by English Heritage) will be left standing as final plans for demolition were approved in 2013. I visited the estate in march/april 2014...and the signs of rebirth were already visible...
